Il-76 'Candid' - Ukraine
The Ilyushin Il-76, NATO codename 'Candid', is a four-jet strategic transport developed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau during the Soviet era. It first took to the air in March 1971, but remains a mainstay of many military and civil operators in Russia, former Soviet states and other countries to this day.
Specialised derivatives have included airborne command post, airborne early warning, air-to-air refuelling and firefighting versions amongst others. Modernised variants, with new engines, are still in production as the number of Il-76s and variants built nears 1,000. The example attending RIAT 2019 is from the 25th Transport Aviation Brigade, based at Melitopol Air Base.
