McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle - USA
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-15E Strike Eagle is among the world's great combat aircraft. An all-weather, by day or night-capable multirole strike fighter, it made its combat debut during Operation Desert Shield: the 1991 Gulf conflict. Some 25 years on, the type's again active in that part of the world but this time countering the IS (Islamic State) threat. 236 Strike Eagles entered USAF service.
This example is supplied by the 492nd Fighter Squadron from the RAF Lakenheath-based 48th Fighter Wing's two F-15E squadrons. The squadron has two nicknames, the Madhatters and the Bolars - both originating from the squadron wearing the traditional headgear of the nation they are based in. This has included Berets in the France, Bowler Hats in the UK and the Fez in Turkey.
