Aermacchi MB-339 PAN (x10)

The Aermacchi MB-339 was developed from the MB-326 to replace it and the Fiat G.91T as the advanced trainer for the Italian Air Force. First flying in 1976, the original MB-339A was produced in a variety of different specialised versions including the MB-339PAN for air display use. In addition to being a trainer, the aircraft possesses a light attack capability and the MB-339A was the only jet powered combat aircraft to be operated from the occupied Port Stanley airfield during the Falklands War by Argentina. Further developments of the MB-339 have included a single-seat combat version and the modernised MB-339C/CD with a more powerful engine, modern avionics and air refuelling capabilities.

The Italian Air Force first took delivery of the MB-339A in 1979 as its new advanced jet trainer and then later purchased the MB-339CD version allowing crews to be trained in a more modern cockpit and in aerial refuelling as part of the syllabus. The type also provided a secondary air defence role for major events tasked with intercepting slow moving aircraft. In addition to the MB-339A, the Italian Air Force ordered 21 MB-339PAN variants specially configured for aerial display which were used to equip the national display team, the Frecce Tricolori and replaced the Fiat G.91PAN. The Frecce Tricolori are celebrating their 65th anniversary during 2025 and will shortly be transferring to the Leonardo T-346 Master as their new display aircraft.

We are very pleased to announce that as part of their 65th anniversary season, the Frecce Tricolori will be performing in the RIAT25 flying display on Saturday and Sunday.
