Auster J/5F Aiglet Trainer
The Auster J/5 Autocar was developed in the late 1940s as a four seat light aircraft for private use. The J/5F Aiglet Trainer was a later development of the Autocar featuring new wings and was specifically designed to perform aerobatic displays. Whilst this was primarily a civilian aircraft, it did also see service with Jordan, Lebanon and Pakistan.
Whilst the Aiglet Trainer saw limited use, the base model Autocar was ordered by the RAF as a liaison aircraft and entered service as the Auster AOP.V. Over 791 were built and the type was configured with instruments to fly in poor visibility and could have armour plate fitted around the pilots seat. Postwar a number of Austers found their way into service with the Israeli Air Force.
A privately owned J/5F Aiglet Trainer will be on static display at this year’s Air Tattoo, only 77 of these aircraft were ever built.
