The Local Area

The Royal International Air Tattoo is held annually at RAF Fairford, home of the 420th Air Base Squadron, United States Air Force.

Many of England's best-known tourist destinations are on the doorstep of RAF Fairford. The base is a gateway to the Cotswolds, an area that combines the harmony of nature and period architecture with major shopping centres, first-class sporting facilities and excellent restaurants.

The former Roman settlement of Cirencester is today better known for its antique shops and bistros - and for its 12th century church featuring a chalice once belonging to Anne Boleyn, the ill-fated wife of Henry VIII. To the west the spa town of Cheltenham still displays the elegance of its Regency origins and to the east there are the famous 'dreaming spires' of Oxford.

On the borders of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, the Cotswold Water Park is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. Water sport fans can enjoy sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, jet and water skiing and even power boat racing.

Swindon offers a 32-lane superbowl, 18-hole golf complex, grand-prix go-karting, ice-skating and a lagoon pool. The engineering genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel is celebrated at 'STEAM', the Great Western Railway Museum, conveniently located next to a designer shopping village.
